Historic Games

Accounts of historic games in the Swans’ history (all written by project volunteers)

Swansea Town 1 Cardiff City 1 (7 September 1912)

The club’s first ever official match.

Swansea Town 1 Blackburn Rovers 0: FA Cup 1st Round (1915)

Swansea’s first giant-killing. As professional football struggled to sustain itself in an atmosphere of increasing public and press hostility brought about by the tensions of wartime, the 1914-1915 season produced one bright spot for the Swans. The pleasure from the heroic victory against league champions Blackburn had to sustain the fans through nearly four more years of conflict….

Swansea Town v Bolton Wanderers (27th March 1926)

The Swans’ first FA Cup Semi-Final, played at White Hart Lane. After a tremendous run including defeat of Arsenal at the Vetch, the Swans froze at the final hurdle before Wembley.

Swansea Town 0 Newcastle United 1: FA Cup 5th Round (1952)

Bitter taste of defeat for Town, as the fervour of more than 27,000 fans affected the players at the Vetch, when a bit more composure might have seen off the cup holders.

Swansea Town v Preston: second FA Cup Semi-final (1964)

After a cup run to rival the 1926 achievments – this time with an away win at champions-to-be Liverpool – the Swans faced Preston at Villa Park. Once more the bridesmaids….

Swansea Town v Cardiff City, 1969 Welsh Cup Final

A two-leg match that perhaps marked the first crowd trouble between the two south Wales clubs.

Promotion at Preston 1981

The Swans secure promotion to Division 1

West Ham in the FA Cup 1999

A giant killing to remember.

Swansea City 4 Hull City 2 (3 May 2003)

A James Thomas hat trick keeps the Swans in the league

Bury 0-1 Swansea City (7 May 2005)

The Swans win promotion and start their rise towards the Premiership.

Gillingham v Swansea City (12 April 2008)

The Swans are promoted took into the second tier of the league system for the first time in 24 years.

Swansea City v Reading: Championship Play-Off Final (2011)

That tremendous afternoon at Wembley which saw the Swans reach the promised land of the Premier League. Thrills, spills and a Sinclair hat-trick to seal the win.

Swansea City v Tranmere Rovers (2005)

The first league match at the new Liberty Stadium against unfashionable Merseysiders Tranmere. All great journeys begin with a single step…..

Swansea City v Nottingham Forest: Championship Play-off Semi-final (2011)

Another of the momentous steps taken on the road to Wembley and ultimately the Premier League. The home leg of this play-off semi-final followed a gritty 0-0 at the City Ground, with Forest playing well. The rest is history….

Rushden and Diamonds 0-0 in the Petty era also deserves a special mention as the football was a sideshow as the fans concentrated their attentions on the Director’s box all game. Rushden’s manager, Brian Talbot, I think said he had never been involved in a game like it throughout his career.
